Would you like loaded fries with that? (silly question, the answer is always yes)
Located in a student village, the Varsity location in Nedlands near the University of Western Australia boasts a young, American college movie vibe. Upon entering you are greeted with chilled-out couches and flashy TVs packed with students on their lunch breaks gorging themselves on hot wings and a vast range of to-die-for burgers.
Varsity Burgers dons an American frat house flair with cable barrel tables, picnic benches and rustic wooden counters side-by-side with pool tables and televised live sports. It’s a crime to leave the venue without trying the cream cheese jalapeño poppers teamed with a decadent blue cheese sauce. The hot wings are spicy enough to make you cry, but so good you can’t resist. We suggest the mild version for the light hearted which is teamed with fresh celery and the house cheese whip dip- heaven in your mouth!
It’s an ideal environment to perch up for the afternoon and watch live sports or the most recent fight broadcast live from Foxtel with your mates over one of the many beers or ciders on tap. Alternatively, you can wash it all down with one of the pimped-out milkshakes in flavours like popcorn, salted caramel and chocolate marshmallow. YAS!
The crowd pleasing Texan burger will make you feel like you’ve dusted off your cowboy boots and stepped foot in Texas. The double meat patties combined with gooey cheese, tobacco onions (which are legit crispy onion rings stuffed in the burger) all smothered in BBQ sauce with have you hollering for more Americana goodness after you’re done.
SOMEDAY COFFEE CO.
Today’s the day.
The décor reminds me of my childhood bedroom, the comforting hues of pink and green make a homely environment where a communal feel is experienced by local customers and regulars who frequent the corner deli style café. The velvet green bench seats lined along the side walls make comfy eating spots and the wide windows open up to wooden bench seats under outside umbrellas.
Once walking in, you’ll instantly feel welcome and like a part of the fam. Banter, jokes and good suggestions don’t go astray and the baristas coffee art skills are on point. Endless milk options flow all day long, from coconut and soy to almond and full cows.
Eve Watson, (a Perth food innovator if you’d like) has thought up the breakky and lunch menu which is designed to be seasonal, yet maintains some regular dishes such as the Buddha bowl and pancakes, and incorporates different styles of granola and porridge classics.
The flavour bomb Buddha bowl is so simple and effective, arranged delicately is an array of brown rice, sesame avocado, pickled beetroot, kimchi, bean shoots, spring onions, a perfectly cooked poached egg which oozes upon the slightest touch, all peppered in the most amazing miso dressing. This healthy lunch option is fresh, healthy and so tasty.
The crunchy banana granola is a local favourite, the bowl is filled with oat and banana granola, the sweet spice, made in house is seriously good, with toasted almonds and pepitas, topped with caramelised banana, coconut flakes, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries and a big dollop of Greek yoghurt, they aren’t shy on portion size either.
The gluten free and dairy replacements include house made coyo instead of Greek yoghurt and almond or soy milk options. Topped with edible flowers, the beautiful breakky can be devoured anytime.
THE MOON CAFE
Shoot for the stars and you’ll get to the Moon.
Perth loves this eclectic late-night diner to the moon… and back. Imagine old school milkshake diner tabletops, stools paired with bus-stop seating, vintage arcade games, cosy couches, and comfort food and you have The Moon.
The backroom is like a big indoor greenhouse filled with sky lights lining the ceiling, verge-collection couches and decorations you’d expect to find in your grandma’s living room. Old boom boxes, assorted obscure paintings, run down sewing machines and the like scatter the popular hangout area. The Moon is famous for live music performances, poetry slams, and movie trivia nights. The cider on tap is delicious, and the selection of beers (including cans) are satisfying for even the fussiest drinkers.
The friendly, happy and helpful staff are always willing to accommodate to any dietary requirements or changes you want. The food is quick, easy and simple but done well, and it’s damn tasty.
The red pasta is definitely worth a whirl, the penne is cooked al dente and the salami and green olives complement each other perfectly.
You can’t go to The Moon and side step the Moon burger, packed with a juicy and filling homemade beef patty, mustard, special moon mayo and tomato sauce in a special pretzel bun. The arthouse salad is a great accompaniment to the carbs and I honestly don’t know who can make artichokes, beans and peas taste good, but they do here.
The wedges are thick, cooked perfectly and come with lashings of sweet chilli sauce and sour cream. The best kept secret about The Moon is that they dish out food until 2am, the perfect end to a night out with mates or the late-night feed you’ve been craving.
The chocolate dessert pizza (with gluten free base options) is a huge hit, and you can make it vegan friendly with dairy-free ice cream to end your trip to the Moon on a sweet/semi-healthy note.

MARY ST BAKERY
Located on the corner of one of Mount Lawley’s most iconic tree lined streets, the overarching barrel of trees contour the road and make for a beautiful walk once you’ve gorged yourself on doughnuts and pastries.
The busy and bustling bakery turned café and serves as a place to meet, catch up, write, work and feast. The friendly, helpful staff will help you select the best dish for the day to suit your cravings. The modern Spotify playlist jams out on the speakers and reaches the outdoor and indoor seating of the vast space, on this day we had a 70’s playlist and it fit the Friday morning mood like a glove.
The non-traditional breakfast options boast a range of options such as the steak sanga, baked eggs and fried chicken buttermilk pancakes with peanuts, chilli and a fried egg, cooked to perfection, layered in a pool of sticky maple syrup. The veggie baked eggs are cooked in lashings of homemade tomato and chilli sauce, with scattered crunchy chickpeas and creamy Greek yoghurt.
It encompasses a bustling café feel, yet also offers quick and easy bakery take-away options. Take-away loaves of bread are on offer, along with a large selection of freshly baked doughnuts, tarts, cakes, brownies, slices, danishes, croissants (the ham and cheese is to die for) and fresh sambos to go with your super cute packaged, pound coffee blend which is served hot and fast. All of the baked goods are made in West Leederville and distributed daily to all Perth locations.
Do yourself a favour and make sure you refuse to leave without trying the extra-large slab of red velvet cake. The quadruple layered red velvet is moulded between a thick smothering of cream cheese upon each layer. The red is so prominent, it’s enough to make your tongue change to red and to cause your jeans to become unbuttoned.
Not to mention the salted caramel and pistachio and rosewater donuts, their fluffy, sweet and moreish textures will have you in disbelief that something so decent can exist. If you need something to wash it down, Stockist, The Juicist has got your back with cold pressed juices ready to go.
This Perth institution is one not to be missed on your next Mount Lawley visit.

MISS CHOWS
Tell your friends.
The simple and accessible restaurant resides in the classy precinct of Claremont Quarter, and the trendy décor and modern dishes match the up-market area.
Everything is made in a central kitchen and brought to Miss Chow’s and their sister location Rice Baby.
Despite the connotations of MSG soaked rice and greasy chicken with the word Chinese, Miss Chow’s has aimed and succeeded at adopting health conscious practices to all of their food. All of the produce used is sourced locally, in order to support WA businesses and achieve the freshest results, the prawns are from Shark Bay, the wines are local and organic.
No MSG appears in any of the food items and preservatives and colourings are not an option. The Chef’s selection of a bamboo steamer filled with veg, pork and chicken dumplings innovatively use spinach juice to colour the green vegetarian dumplings and the yellow chicken and mushroom dumplings are coloured using pumpkin and carrot.
Owner, Miss Chan is allergic to these nasties herself and mentions,
“what we don’t eat, we don’t feed to others.”
Their traffic light menu is designed to contribute to the healthier lifestyle which is a necessity in today’s existence, the concept behind it includes 50% of the menu as steamed items, 30% in between, and 20% is fried, to keep the balance of health in check.
You can watch the masters at work, whipping up the beautiful creations through the large glass windows of the kitchen, all dumplings are handmade and the real winners are the chunky prawn and vegetable pan fried dumplings, served on a platter of four, the crispy crunch in each flour wrapper is so satisfying on every bite.
Passionfruit bubble tea with jelly pearl balls that explode in your mouth with every sip and bite is the perfect accompaniment with each meal, or the jasmine tea, with free refills on request top off each meal with a punch of cleansing flavour.
No Chinese dish would be completed without edamame beans, obviously and these ones did not disappoint. They exceeded expectations with flakes of chilli and salt: the perfect crunch for each dish.
The classy, yet affordable establishment puts a modern twist on traditional Chinese cuisine. The chicken and veg sang choy bao, which is stir fried and served with lettuce cups so you can build your very own lettuce wraps are so tasty and leave you feeling light and healthy afterwards. The chop chop chicken is a must, a platter of crispy pieces of perfectly cooked chicken dunked in black vinegar sauce and topped with coriander and chili. We’ll be back.

MOP DONUTS
You’ll need a Mop for this one
It’s the unthinkable combinations and creations that make MOP stand out from the crowd. A mac n cheese and vegemite donut toastie is too outlandish you say? The makers at MOP don’t think so, and are continually pushing the creative flavour boundaries.
MOP’s passionate innovators Giovanni and Stephen have regular flavour brainstorming meetings to concoct these delicious flavour combos. They will buy a bunch of lollies and chocolate, spread them on the table and pair the crazy flavours with custard samples until they are satisfied.
Classic sweet flavours range from Nutella, Ferrero, Curly Wurly, Oreo, and Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate to Mars Bar, Bounty, Snickers, Mint Aero, salted caramel and belgian chocolate. Oh and did we mention that they also sell drunken doughnuts in flavours such as espresso martini, Limoncello lime brulee, butterscotch Baileys and Fireball cinnamon whiskey and apple pie.
The Leederville location is where the three original custom built German fryers started pumping out unique donut combos a year ago.
The new toasted “sandwich” range involves unthought of flavours wedged between unsweetened brioche donut buns. Think kransky cheese sausage, horseradish and sauerkraut or steak, philly, mop cheese and hot sauce and pulled pork, mop cheese, slaw and house made tomato relish. The classic chicken and special mop cheese and garlic aioli toasted in a brioche bun does not disappoint either.
The donut burgers are the real winners around here with the tastiest concoction of juicy buttermilk chicken, thick rashers of bacon, coleslaw and a house made chilli jam encased in a brioche donut bun that you’ll struggle to fit into your mouth.
Mount Lawley and Fremantle will see their doors open in the coming weeks, and expansions are rapid and on the rise. The gluten-free range, available on UberEATS includes a rosewater and choccy cake flavour combo.
Mop which stands for Made On Premise, means literally everything is made in house, fresh, by hand. From the donuts to the slaw, to the mop cheese, to the chilli jams and relishes, all flavor boosters are made on premise at the Malaga commercial factory and distributed across all Perth locations twice a day to ensure ultimate freshness.

EL PUBLICO
Let’s taco bout it.
Your one stop spot for authentic Mexican food with a modern Aussie twist. All of the tostadas, tacos and snacks are made in house with the freshest produce, and you can definitely taste the quality. El Publico is the perfect, moody date night location where you can satisfy all of your mexi cravings.
With a strong emphasis on drinking culture, the bar opened six years ago and started off serving drinks, now you can dine and indulge in Mezcal and Tequila focused cocktails along with a wide range of other spirits and mixes made to your liking. The margheritas are top notch and pair perfectly with all the menu items.
The helpful staff are more than happy to go through the menu with you or there’s a little Mexican glossary at the top of the menu to help you out. Every concoction comes with habanero sauce and the tastiest salsa verde made from coriander, lime juice, garlic, vinegar and jalapeno- the best accompaniment to any dish, or if you’re like me, you’ll eat it straight from the jars with a spoon.
Start off with crispy and crunchy flame-grilled totopos alongside a creamy guacamole and yummy salsa roja that packs a small punch, follow with the trio of tacos which include duck, avocado puree, maximo mole, which is like a Mexican curry paste, and a jalapeno
diablo chicken, avocado, spicy mayo, peanut brittle… amazing, topped off with a fish, pico de gallo, with cabbage and chipotle mayo.
The menu must haves are the mogo mogo balls and the street corn, they push the boundaries whilst maintaining authentic Mexican style.
The beef mogo mogo balls are made from eight-hour slow cooked beef brisket, coated in onion, garlic, stock and chillies, rolled into a batter and coated with banana and maize flour and then lightly fried twice, paired with the tastiest chipotle crema. Ordering the street corn means receiving a massive bowl of char grilled corn off the cob with queso fresco and the most delicious mayo and guajillo chile.
The massive commissioned art pieces sprawled throughout the restaurant will take you on a true Mexican experience. One piece by Perth artist Deak William features the goddess Maguey Mezcal feeding a baby rabbit from her multiple breasts whilst emerging from an agave plant with strong Day of the Dead influences striking throughout. The myth of the 400 rabbits in aztec mythology features Mayahuel, the goddess of the agave plant and fertility. Tequila, of course comes from the agave plant and is a large focus in the menu. The piece is featured opposite the bar and makes for an amazing conversation starter.

LONG CHIM TUCK SHOP
Better than the school canteen.
Bringing authentic Thai street food to Perth, the tuck shop is born out of the main restaurant in the heritage listed Treasury Building, made to take away or eat in Supreme Court Gardens across the road or in the comfort of your home.
All ingredients are sourced from Thailand and all dishes are designed to favour each other. Renowned chef, David Thompson has succeeded in bringing authentic culture and integrity into the food, here in the underground, hole in the wall establishment, Long Chim Tuck Shop.
The sweet potato Madtarbark (the jaffle of Thailand) is unlike anything you’ve tried before, and it will leave you wishing you’d never finished it. It encompasses bursting flavours of soft, curried sweet potato, cumin and onion in crispy, fried roti bread, topped with vinegar, shallots, chili and cucumber. – it’s filling as a meal on its own, or a good side dish to share with others.
The dishes are unapologetic and served traditionally, they don’t tone down on the Thai flavours just because they’ve broken through to the Western world. The in-your-face dishes possess a mix of components on each plate. The biryani offers either a braised lamb combo or a soft roasted pumpkin mix, similar to a fried pilaf. The inside out chive cake consists of cooked off garlic chives sliced into a cake, for only $8, it is one the tastiest savoury treats to go with a meal.
The crispy pork and prawn wontons are seriously complimented when submerged in the three flavour sauce, which combines tamarind for sourness, fish sauce for saltiness, and kaffir lime leaves for the beautiful aroma.
The food is ready to go, nothing is over $16 and the tuck shop is open Monday to Friday 11-2:30pm.

CIAO ITALIA
Ciao Italy, Hello Perth
Entering the neighbourhood Italian eatery feels like you’re stepping into a welcoming, bustling family home. An intoxicating scent of garlic bread and chilli mussels fill the air, combined with familiar Italian music. The shoulder to shoulder seating provides a warm and cosy night out that famously is always busy. With no bookings, make sure you arrive early and don’t be deterred by masses of people on the footpath waiting for a table.
The traditional red, green and white checked tablecloths and sounds of cutlery clanging, laughter and chatter over red wine make for a cheery atmosphere. A mealtime conversation starter, the chicken parmigiana is literally the size of your head and arguably one of the tastiest dishes with the gooiest, stringiest cheese you’ll try in Perth.
The quick service will surprise you, as the kitchen is small, but not to be underestimated. Ciao Italia pump out meals at a rapid speed and offer a selection of banter to go with the large portions.
A common sight here is people filling up take away containers for lunch leftovers for the next day, so BYO and be #PLASTICFREE. You’ll feel like you’ve been whisked into an authentic European dream with the dishes that grace the tables. The very popular Ciao Italia pasta features fettuccine mixed up with marinated chicken strips, mushrooms, sundried tomatoes and spring onions in a creamy white sauce. With parmesan to top it off, you literally can’t go wrong with this dish.
The traditional Sicilian pizza is layered with a fresh tomato sauce base, mozzarella cheese, mild Italian sausage, bacon, black olives and extra ricotta cheese. Did I read two cheeses? Yes please!
I suggest you don’t eat lunch if you’re heading there for dinner, cancel all of your plans and make some room in your stomach and prepare to feast on traditional Italian cuisine. Be sure to ask for the chilli as an accompaniment to pizzas and pastas, the traditional spicy sambal style bowl of chili will warm you up faster than the heat from the wood-fire pizza oven and makes for a perfect, spicy topping.
Lastly, going to Ciao Italia and not getting the tiramisu is, as according to the waitstaff, “like going to Rome and not visiting the Pope.”
The much-loved house dessert is coated in lashings of double cream and layers of coffee liquor drenched sponge fingers topped with a mascarpone cream cheese and dusted with cacao, who could say no to that?
